Since the beginning of 2017, many of the largest domain registrars have raised their prices for domain renewals dramatically. Now, as before, you can register a domain with them in many popular zones of Russia for a little more than 90 rubles. However, the cost of renewal for the next year will be almost an order of magnitude more expensive: in the range of 500-1000 rubles (depending on renewal terms, zone and specific registrar).

It’s one thing if you have only one domain, but many of our clients, for the convenience of their visitors, register dozens of similar domains and redirect to the main one. In this case, simply for the possession of these domains, you will have to pay a tangible amount.

Along the way, the changes also affected the prices for renting SSL certificates. Major domain registrars have always only had paid certificate options available. Now, on the wave of overwhelming transition to HTTPS, their prices have increased significantly.

Previously, we were very skeptical about registering a domain directly with a registrar: inconvenient control panels, slow and lazy technical support, paid SSL certificates. Now we don’t see any point in it at all.

We recommend considering the option of transferring your domains to registrar partners – medium and large hosting companies. They work with the registrar on special agreements that provide significant discounts on domain rental services. Therefore, the service of registering and renewing domains with them earlier, and especially now, is cheaper. For example, our partner SprintHost registers and renews domains in the .ru and .rf zones for only 140 rubles (when using their hosting).
